Here's something that kinda surprises me (and kinda doesn't). The
Houston Chronicle is the
number six newspaper site in the country. Not impressed? Here's a list of the only sites ranked higher (rankings based on unique visitors and number of page views):
- NYTimes
- USA Today
- Washington Post
- LA Times
- Wall Street Journal
- Houston Chronicle
Now, I rarely read the Chronicle because most of their writers just aren't that good. But I prefer their Web site to all five of the papers listed above the Chron. Why? First, the Chron doesn't require you to register for content. You
can register, but you can see everything on the site without registering. Ever. That's one of the reasons they're always linked on
Fark and
Digg; you can send your pals a story without worrying they'll have to create an account or give their demographic info. But the other reason Chron.com is so great is their commitment to making themselves useful. What do I mean? Time and weather are front and center on the site. There's tons of content on the home page, and little space is wasted. You can grab RSS feeds for everything on their site.
But perhaps best of all is their commitment to blogs and user interaction. They underwrite a number of professional bloggers (e.g., Lance Walker's now defunct
BarTab,
Handstamp). But they now allow users to
create their own blogs on the site. Their openness and interaction are kind of refreshing, and other sites are sites,
like the USA Today, are starting to emulate that success.
Bottom line: the Chron is huge. Who knew?
