A former general says we can't get out of Iraq fast enough.
A few weeks I posted an editorial by General William Odom, Victory is not An Option, to Life is a Thrill. That editorial explained some of the "myths" that dominate the rhetoric we hear from those who think we should stay in Iraq. As someone who has steadfastly disagreed with the Democrats on this issue (i.e., I've not been pro-timetable), Odom's editorial challenged my thinking quite a bit. I'll explain my own mixed emotions on Iraq in a later post. For now, I would encourage you to read a follow-up interview in which Hugh Hewitt asks Odom to elaborate on that editorial. Hewitt believes we must achieve victory in Iraq, so the interview functions as a kind of debate over our future strategy in Iraq.
I should emphasize that both men appear to concede the Iraq War has been a disaster. The question is what to do now. I do believe that those who would have us stay have good faith reasons for their stance, but more and more I find myself persuaded by General Odom's take. I should also note that I remain unimpressed with the Democrats' thoughtless "timetable" pandering. If you read Odom's pieces, you'll see the difference.
